Thanks for continuing to tell your friends and family about my office. We've gotten busy enough to add an Associate Doctor – read about Dr. Anjali below. I'm including tips on healthy eating for the holidays, some thoughts on Flex Plans and a Special Offer for children's visits. Check out the article on childhood back pain and bring your kids in for a visit-- give them the gift of health.

Eating Healthy for the Holidays

1. First thing - control what you can control - eat a healthy breakfast and a light lunch, before the holiday meal. That will take the edge off so you won't be starving when you get to the table. Remember to take your enzymes with meals! (see Cravings)

2. Eat slowly and savor each and every bite. Don't put more than one spoonful in your mouth at any given time and set your fork/spoon down while you savor the flavors of the delicious foods you are tasting.

3. Chew each mouthful of food thoroughly and take in all the flavors and textures of the food you are eating.

4. For heartburn or indigestion: Remember, your stomach makes acid to aid digestion. When you take an acid blocker (Tums, Rolaids, Pepcid, Tagamet, Nexium…) you decrease your ability to digest food. This can result in nutrient deficiencies and make you feel tired and achy. Taking a digestive enzyme (PAN, BIL, VSCLR, HCL or STM*) early in the meal will HELP your digestion instead of blocking it. If you have discomfort after eating, take two more.

5. Don't worry about drinking liquids with meals, just make sure you don't use the liquid to wash down food that isn't thoroughly chewed.

6. Have dessert only if you really have room at that time. When you do have dessert, have a small piece, sit down and enjoy it and take extra enzymes.

The holidays are more than just the food – they're a time for traditions and family. Take in the company of those around you and share your experiences as well as your recipes. And don't forget, no one gets out of balance from one holiday meal. It's what you do the day after and the entire year that will make a difference. J

Cure for Sugar Cravings

Remember, your body will crave the food group you are having the most trouble digesting. So if you're dreaming of sugar plums it means your body is not breaking down carbs very effectively.

SVG* is a supplement that helps digestion and also provides a good source of carbohydrate. So if you are craving sweets take SVG with meals. MSCLR* can help reduce cravings for breads, starches and alcohol.                                                                                                            

If you are feeling hungry all the time (even after eating) and noticing rumbling in your stomach, you may have dysbiosis. A powder supplement called SMI* can help. It helps create a healthy balance of yeast/bacteria in the intestine - which can be disrupted by eating sugar and sweets. It can also reduce cravings for carbohydrates.

Welcome Dr. Anjali!

We are happy to announce that we have a new Chiropractor in our office! Many of you have met Dr. Anjali already, but for those of you who haven’t, stop by the office and say hello!

Dr. Anjali Agrawal is a Bay Area native, having grown up in San Jose and in Los Altos. She received her BS in Biochemistry/Cell Biology from U.C. San Diego and then returned home to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in San Jose.

She has traveled abroad to India and Mexico to deliver chiropractic care, and had incredible experiences seeing hundreds of patients in each country!

With her love for kids, she is currently receiving post-graduate training specializing in Pregnancy & Pediatrics. On the weekends, she spends her free time teaching Bollywood dance to kids in Sunnyvale and in Mountain View. She has a Special Offer for children's visits for the month of December. See below.

Does your company offer a Flex Plan?

Sometimes referred to as a cafeteria plan, flex plan, or a Section 125 plan, a Flexible Savings Account (FSA) lets you set aside a certain amount of your paycheck into an account — before paying income taxes.

During the year, you have access to this account for reimbursement of expenses — not covered by insurance — that you regularly pay for. Many of our patients have plans that cover massage done in a doctor's office and nutritional supplements. Some have a debit card that can be used to pay directly for expenses. Please check with your plan administrator for your companies guidelines.

Good Health Starts Early

Did you know that about half of all children will experience low back pain?¹   And that back pain during childhood or adolescence is a predictor of adult back pain? A recent study of 10,000 Danish residents shows a link between adolescent and adult low back pain.²

Chances are that your current regimen of chiropractic care may be working out kinks in your back that have been around a lot longer than you remember. Getting your child evaluated and treated now can reduce the likelihood of back pain in the future.

In a recent study on children with back pain, age 4 – 18, the most common diagnosis was a subluxation (vertebra that is out of alignment), appearing in half of these children. Patients were almost universally treated with spinal adjustments, with few requiring other forms of therapy. After six weeks of treatment, major improvement (defined as "much improved" or "resolved") was seen in nearly 90% of patients, and there were no complications in any of the patients.

In children, as in adults, chiropractic treatment is extremely effective for back pain, regardless of the cause or characteristics. Call our office for more information about treating and preventing childhood back pain.
